How to create a unique and memorable Christmas while at the same time raise the client's online/social profile, bringing it up to date with the latest technological innovations.
the idea
Bring the internet of things into the airport by taking a traditional symbol of Christmas and making it interactive via the web. A celebration of Christmas in the airport terminal which allows passengers to send their own digital season’s greetings, creating a unique and innovative interaction between the physical world and the web. The Social Christmas Tree is born!
the execution
In the departures hall of Terminals 1 and 2 at Rome Airport Fiumicino, two giant Christmas trees fitted with specialy made LED lights were set up. Thanks to OpenPicus technology and a custom-built Web App, users from any part of the world are able to turn on the lights and view the results in real time via a webcam.
Users can then post and share their own Christmas wishes with a screenshot of the tree with their light switched on. To help spread the word a competition was created to encourage people to invite their friends and family to vote for their message and win a weekend for two in a European capital.
Creating engagement with the public via a dedicated Facebook App. Users are able to receive notifications directly on their personal profile pages as well as invite their friend and family to vote for their message.
Supported by a print campaign and billboard signage at the airport, but above all by word of mouth. By simply inviting the public to share their own season’s greetings the Social Christmas Tree became viral.
